What Is Shoulder Stabilization Surgery?

Shoulder stabilization surgery is a procedure to correct and prevent chronic shoulder instability caused by a shoulder dislocation.

Although shoulder dislocations rarely need surgery, shoulder stabilization surgery may be necessary to prevent shoulder instability. This is especially true for what Dr. Sterett and his team refer to as "consequence athletes" for whom a second shoulder dislocation could be life-threatening.

What are the Symptoms of Shoulder Instability?

Depending on the patient's age at their first dislocation, they have a 10-100% chance of experiencing chronic shoulder instability later in life. The demographic risk is as follows:

  • Under 20 years old: 72-100% probability of a second shoulder dislocation

  • Between 20-30 years old: 70-82% probability of a second shoulder dislocation

  • Over 50 years old: 10-22% probability of a second shoulder dislocation

Chronic shoulder instability is a condition where the shoulder slips out of place repeatedly. Just one shoulder dislocation can put you at risk for continued shoulder dislocations, instability, or giving out further down the line - especially if you dislocated your shoulder at a young age.

Patients with chronic shoulder instability commonly report the following symptoms:

  • Chronic shoulder pain

  • Repeated feelings of "giving out" or "looseness" in the shoulder

  • Multiple shoulder dislocations or strains

  • Several instances of the shoulder slipping in and out of the joint

Shoulder instability needs a medical exam for formal diagnoses. At his practice with Vail-Summit Orthopaedics & Neurosurgery, Dr. Sterett and his team will discuss your medical history, perform a physical exam, and order imaging tests to determine the extent of your condition.

Who Needs Shoulder Dislocation Surgery?

Certain athletes or sports enthusiasts can face life-threatening situations in the event of a shoulder dislocation. These include people who participate in the following sports and activities:

  • Rock climbers

  • Kayakers

  • Hang gliders

  • Slackliners

  • Big mountain skiers

After people in these sports dislocate their shoulder, they are considered “consequence athletes.” This means that even a 10% chance of a second dislocation is an unacceptable risk due to their lifestyle.

To prioritize this population's health, safety, and quality of life, Dr. Sterett will typically recommend shoulder stabilization surgery. Shoulder stabilization surgery can be performed one of two ways:

  • Arthroscopic Stabilization - Bankart Reconstruction: This arthroscopic procedure involves re-anchoring and suturing the torn piece of cartilage in the shoulder joint.

  • Open Surgery - Coracoid Transfer (aka Latarjet Procedure): A larger incision over the shoulder, allowing Dr. Sterett to transfer a piece of the shoulder blade bone to the front of the shoulder socket.

Both procedures help restore shoulder security and stability. The type of procedure Dr. Sterett recommends will focus on getting his patients back to doing the activities they love.
