3 Things You Can Learn From Mikaela Shiffrin, Lindsey Vonn, and Resi Stiegler

Mikaela Shiffrin was in the middle of what would turn out to be her best season ever, winning the World Cup Overall Title, only the 3rd US woman to accomplish this.Β

This year, I had the good fortune to travel to Zagreb, Croatia where the Men's and Women’s US Ski Teams were battling against the world in the slalom.  Half a world away...but it felt like home, at least for a little while!

Mikaela Shiffrin was in the middle of what would turn out to be her best season ever, winning the World Cup Overall Title, only the 3rd US woman to accomplish this.

In Squaw Valley, this March,  Mikaela brought home the gold in both the Slalom and GS World Cup races just one week before the World Cup Finals in Aspen.  Resi Stiegler, one of my long-time favorites on the US Team, also capped off her season at both of these venues.  So very proud of these ladies!

Lessons We Can Learn From These Top Competitors

So what does it take to keep yourself healthy and strong while traveling all over the world? And what can we learn from these amazing competitors like Lindsey Vonn, Mikaela Shiffrin, and Resi Stiegler?

I'm going to share a couple of tips here for all you young up-and-coming athletes-- but these tips can apply to anyone trying to becoming better at their sport of choice or recovering/rehabbing from an injury.

Putting in The Work Will Pay Off

In any facet of life, it's easy to see the end result and assume that somebody got there by just plain being more talented than everyone else. Luckily, with social media and the internet, now we get to see a lot of the "behind-the-scenes" straight from the athletes themselves. When you get to see the type of work that these ladies put into building success, not only is it an indicator of the type of passion and commitment you need to achieve your goals, but it's a testament to what you really can achieve if you put your body, mind, and spirit into what you are doing.

See Setbacks as a Chance to Get Better

All the athletes I mentioned have had major injury setbacks recently. In fact, in a sport such as alpine skiing, you almost have to plan for these unfortunate instances. When you are racing at death-defying speeds on two slats of plywood, you have to be on your game. And when injuries occur, you really need to be as focused mentally as you are physically.

One thing I see in athletes who are able to get back to the top is an icy determination and the ability to keep a positive attitude even in the midst of setbacks.

Trust Your Team

Getting anywhere in life takes cooperation and dedication, and having the support of others is crucial! For the ladies on the U.S. Ski Team, having the support of parents, loved ones, coaches, trainers, doctors, and the people who watch them on tv or show up at these great events. (That means YOU!)

So whatever you do, nurture your support system and let them know how much they mean to you. Don't be afraid to lean on people when you really need their help, and ask for it. The more support you can cultivate, the more chances you will have to succeed!

Keep On Pushing

You aren't always going to get the results that you want-- that's why it's called competition, and that's why it's hard work.

However, you can't win if you don't stay in the game. Just check out the Instagram post from Resi Stiegler below-- even though she didn't have the overall season she wanted, she kept it positive, kept pushing, and finally got the result she had been working towards all year. And next year she will come back stronger and ready to push for even more success.
